A customer contacted Fix It Appliance because the refrigerator compartment was no longer cooling properly. Food items were becoming warm even though the appliance appeared to be running normally.
During inspection, the evaporator cover was removed and severe ice accumulation was discovered around the evaporator coil. The excessive ice build-up was preventing proper airflow, causing cooling performance to drop significantly.
Further diagnosis confirmed that the defrost heater had failed. In a frost-free refrigerator, the defrost heater automatically melts accumulated frost from the evaporator coil during normal operation.
When the heater stops working, ice continues to build up around the evaporator coil. Over time, airflow becomes restricted and cold air can no longer circulate properly throughout the refrigerator compartment.
During this repair, the evaporator fan motor was also found to be faulty after being affected by excessive ice accumulation. Both faulty components were replaced and the refrigerator was restored to normal cooling operation.
After the evaporator was defrosted, electrical testing was carried out on the evaporator fan motor. Voltage was present at the fan motor connector, confirming that power was reaching the component.
Despite receiving the correct voltage supply, the fan motor failed to operate. This confirmed that the fan motor itself was faulty and required replacement.
A new evaporator fan motor was installed together with the defrost heater. After reassembly and testing, the refrigerator returned to normal cooling operation with proper airflow restored throughout the appliance.
