A customer contacted Fix It Appliance after returning from a holiday and discovering a severe insect infestation inside their refrigerator. Before leaving, all food items had been removed and the refrigerator was switched off.

Upon returning home, the customer found insects throughout the freezer compartment and internal sections of the refrigerator. Concerned that the appliance might be beyond repair, they contacted us for an inspection.

Fortunately, after a thorough assessment, the refrigerator was able to be cleaned, restored, and returned to normal operation.

In many cases, insect infestations inside refrigerators are caused by cockroaches seeking shelter in warm electrical compartments and hidden internal spaces. If left untreated, they can contaminate components and create unpleasant odors.

Why You Should Not Use Insect Spray Inside a Refrigerator

Many homeowners attempt to solve refrigerator infestations by spraying insecticide directly inside the appliance. This is not recommended because chemical residue can contaminate food storage areas and damage certain refrigerator components. Professional cleaning and inspection are often the safer option.

What We Found During Inspection

Insects discovered around the refrigerator wiring and connector area.

During our inspection, insects were found in multiple sections of the refrigerator. The infestation had spread beyond the visible compartments and into internal areas of the appliance.

We found contamination around wiring connections, internal panels, and sections of the freezer compartment. At this stage, the customer was concerned that the refrigerator would need to be replaced.

Can the Refrigerator Be Saved?

Many customers assume that an insect-infested refrigerator must be thrown away and replaced.

However, that is not always the case. If the cooling system, insulation, wiring, and major components have not suffered permanent damage, professional cleaning and inspection may restore the appliance safely.

In this case, the customer contacted us before purchasing a new refrigerator, allowing us to assess whether the appliance could be saved.

After disassembling the freezer compartment, additional contamination was found near the evaporator area. A thorough cleaning process was required to remove insect debris and sanitize the affected sections of the refrigerator.

All accessible areas were inspected carefully to ensure no major components had been damaged.

Repair Process

Our technician carefully inspected the refrigerator to determine whether the infestation had caused permanent damage to the appliance.

The affected areas were cleaned and sanitized, while wiring connections and cooling components were checked for damage.

After cleaning and inspection, the refrigerator was tested to ensure that it was operating correctly and cooling normally.

Final Result

After a thorough inspection and cleaning process, the refrigerator was successfully restored and returned to normal operation.

The customer avoided the cost of replacing the appliance and was able to continue using the refrigerator.

This repair demonstrates that a refrigerator affected by insect infestation may still be repairable, depending on the extent of the damage.
